Lineage:
Sensitivity calculations were made based on the cumulative thickness of fine-grained sediment overlying the top of an aquifer. The cumulative thickness was calculated from the till and fine-grained lake sediment thickness data from Part A provided by the MGS.
The pollution sensitivity maps are based on the concept of mapping focused recharge areas where surface water can rapidly move downward through interconnected sand and gravel layers. The fine-grained sediment between aquifers is assumed to act as an aquitard that restricts the vertical movement of groundwater between aquifers.
Raster calculator was used to calculate the cumulative fine-grained sediment thickness. Rasters were reclassified and converted to polygons.
The procedure document for determining buried aquifer and bedrock surface pollution sensitivity based on cumulative fine-grained sediment thickness is available at http://files.dnr.state.mn.us/waters/groundwater_section/mapping/gw/gw02_ps-babs.pdf
