Unless otherwise noted, all 1883 data are from observations taken at the Ft. Snelling post hospital station.

Average monthly maximum, average monthly minimum and average monthly temperatures are from self-registering

maximum-minimum thermometers. So far as can be determined these instruments were read and re-set

at about 0700 hours each day. Fixed time averages are from fixed time observations taken daily at

0700, 1400 and 2100 hours. These averages were computed by taking the sum of the 0700 and 1400 hour readings

plus twice the sum of the 2100 hour readings and dividing the resulting sum by four.

Extreme maxima and extreme minima are readings from the station's self-registering thermometers.

NONE OF THE FOREGOING AVERAGE TEMPERATURE VALUES HAVE BEEN ADJUSTED TO THE STANDARD

NWS 2400 - 2400 HOUR OBSERVATION DAY. CONTEXTUAL EVIDENCE INDICATES THAT THE 1883 FT. SNELLING

TEMPERATURE RECORD CONTAINS NUMEROUS AND SOMETIMES SIGNIFICANT OBSERVATIONAL

AND / OR TRANSCRIPTIONAL ERRORS.

Monthly mean cloudiness values are the averages based on visual sky cover observations taken daily at 0700,

1400 and 2100 hours local time. A cloudiness value of zero (0) indicates a totally clear sky: a value of five indicates

50 percent cloud cover, etc. 1883 Ft. Snelling annual minimum recorded on 21 January. 1883 annual maximum

recorded on 1 July. Greatest daily precipitation recorded on 6 July. Minimum of 32 F on 7 September.

When they appear in the foregoing tables, ITALICS indicate estimated / derived values.
