This project asserts that the key to regional land-use planning is to identify the services provided by nature and to incorporate them in a green infrastructure as a means of guiding future land development. Sustaining these systems and their benefits requires a conscious choice on the part of communities. Historical precedents are discussed to show the value and beauty that can be achieved by using natural resources in the landscape to organize and influence the pattern of new development.
