Data

Here you will find direct links to Natural Resource Inventory data for use
at the local level. This data is often well suited for site planning or NRI
development at the local community level. In addition, many of
Minnesota's counties implement GIS technology and distribute
geospatial data. If your community is in search of particular data you
may try contacting your county although users of this resource should
not assume that their specific data needs can be met through the
contacts presented here.

Here you will find direct links to Natural Resource Inventory data for use
at the regional level. This data is often too coarse in resolution to be
used for site plans or NRI development at the local community level but
is more suited for regional applications.

        Search Tools
  • Minnesota's GeoGateway: Search regional data centers that distribute digital geographic data about Minnesota and neighboring regions. The GeoGateway provides a focused search of a subset of the sites available via the National Clearinghouse.
  • Data Finder: Locate GIS data for the Twin Cities metropolitan area through the MetroGIS Project.
  • National Clearinghouse: Use the Federal Geographic Data Clearinghouse to search for digital geographic data from all over the world.

        Agency Data Sites
  • DNR Data Deli: Download free GIS data from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
  • Data Finder: Locate GIS data for the Twin Cities metropolitan area through the MetroGIS Project.
  • LMIC's Clearinghouse catalog: Browse by theme for data sets available from the Land Management Information Center and other agencies -- most data is free online. Selected data sets are also available in LMIC's clip-'n-ship data delivery application: preview a data set, compare it with similar data and then download a geographic subset of the file.
  • Mn/DOT BaseMap: Find transportation and basic reference layers from the Department of Transportation.
  • Minnesota River Basin Data Center: Download GIS data for the Minnesota River Basin created by the Water Resources Center at the Minnesota State University, Mankato.

        Data Collections
  • Planning Places with GIS (EPIC Planner): EPIC Planner customizes EPIC GIS to meet the needs of local planners. This new GIS planning tool expands the core functionality of EPIC GIS to include a report and model builder, and also includes data sets tailored to local planning and a conversion tool.
  • Minnesota Environmental Atlas: The Minnesota Environmental Atlas is an electronic textbook developed by the Land Management Information Center, Department of Administration that delivers the best of Minnesota’s GIS data to education, government and citizens. Designed in cooperation with secondary and college instructors, the atlas contains more than 250 digital maps along with the software to retrieve and analyze the information.
  • EPIC GIS: EPIC 2001 is a cost-effective spatial analytical tool suitable for both quick analysis and complex modeling. Developed cooperatively by the EPPL Interface Consortium (DNR and the Land Management Information Center) the software is available free to Minnesota government staff who attend an EPIC 2001 training session. This CD contains over 600 statewide data sets, some in EPPL7 raster and some in shapefile formats.
  • Open Space Protection Opportunities for the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area: This CD-ROM is the most recent tool developed by the National Park Service to help local communities within the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area, as well as other partners, achieve shared goals for open space and resource protection along the river. The CD's information on ecological significance is just one factor that merits consideration in identifying open space protection opportunities. Other factors, such as land ownership and adjacent land uses, also affect the suitability of a particular area as publicly or privately owned undeveloped open space and should be considered in conjunction with the ecological data. Visit the National Park Service website to obtain the land cover vegetation data.
