"The connection of the floodplain to the river is really important in the production of fish. It is something we learned first hand during the 1993 flood on the Mississippi River when we saw literally hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions of fish, moving from a farm field back into the river through a culvert. And we did a count over the course of an hour or two and we estimated I forget how many thousands of fish per hour coming through that culvert and it just pointed out the fact that fish will naturally move into flooded fields which are very productive areas and we get tremendous year classes of fish during these flood events."
