"Often dams are built in higher gradient reaches of river, in other words, in steeper slope. What we do when we make a reservoir is we flood out those areas. And these are often the critical habitats that fish like walleyes and sturgeon, many of the redhorse sucker species, spawn in. So we have dramatically changed that habitat. And because we've built so many of these dams, that type of habitat is becoming rarer and rarer."
