"One of the techniques that has been done in the past a great deal is straightening streams. They actually called it "channel improvement", as a means of increasing the movement of floodwater and draining the land. The problems that this created is that when we cut off a meander, we shorten the stream, and when we shorten the stream we also increase the slope. This increases the erosive ability of the stream, and as you can see the headcutting that is occurring upstream of where it was channelized. This can extend for miles upstream of the original project."
