Introduction How Rivers Run Stories Value Of A River What We Can Do
Reconnecting the Red River
(pg 5 of 5)

Male lake sturgeon reach sexual maturity at age 17, and females don't spawn until age 26. Sturgeon can live 150 years, so it will be several years-perhaps two decades-before we learn whether lake sturgeon will successfully reproduce and repopulate the Red and its tributaries (MnDNR Fisheries, 2002).

But already other fish are using the artificial rapids to pass upstream to spawn: walleyes and saugers to upstream shoals, northern pike to upstream marshes, channel catfish to spawn in the quieter sections of upstream reaches. In fact, about two dozen species are using the modifications to migrate upstream-early indications the Red has been reconnected.
