Since Henry's day we have built over 500 dams on the Red River of the North and its tributaries. Sturgeon no longer had access to critical spawning habitat in the higher gradient tributaries. By the mid-1900s the sturgeon were gone, falling victim to a fragmented river that no longer provided the habitat the fish needed to reproduce.
