Straight River: Do You Want Trout with Your Fries?
(pg 8 of 8)

The Straight and its trout may hang on a couple of unpredictable phenomena.

First is the weather. As the region moves from the wet cycle of the last several years to an inevitable period of drought, irrigators will probably increase pumping from existing wells. Will that be enough to significantly reduce groundwater flow to the Straight? No one knows.

And second is our infatuation with the perfect French fry, sustaining the demand for irrigated potatoes in the sandy soils of northwestern Minnesota.
