Because the spring-fed Straight River flows through an area known for its lakes, not its trout streams, anglers of the area hold the stream in special regard. The Straight is famous for a midsummer hatch of giant mayflies and the resulting feeding frenzy of large brown trout.

But who would have thought that these trophy trout are linked not only to the steady supply of cool groundwater that feeds the Straight, but also to America's insatiable appetite for fast-food French fries?
