Since then, conservation agencies and the Corps of Engineers have tried manipulating the river on a broader scale to reintroduce some of the dynamics of a natural river. This approach has shown greater promise.

For 45 days in 2001 and 90 days in 2002, the Corps opened the gates of Lock and Dam 8, slowly lowering the pool between La Crescent, Minnesota and Genoa, Wisconsin, exposing 2,000 acres of river bottom. The drawdown mimicked long summer dry spells on a natural river.
