Aquatic habitats: Life cycle stages (pg 2 of 2)

A variety of stream habitats is also essential to satisfy needs of an individual species during different stages of its life cycle. The illustration of a typical smallmouth bass life cycle (shown on the left) demonstrates how habitat needs shift from spawning to adult life stages.

Management decisions that prescribe river conditions to favor only one life stage, such as adult smallmouth bass, do not sustain the resource. If we do not adequately consider the diverse habitat needs of a species throughout its entire life cycle, we may contribute to, if not cause, a population to crash.
