Vertical connectivity is also lost when water appropriation from nearby aquifers exceeds the stream's recharge capacity. The loss of groundwater flowing into a small stream may result in lower flows, higher water temperatures (and corresponding lower oxygen levels since cold water carries more dissolved oxygen), and lower levels of beneficial minerals such as calcium carbonate. The unintended consequence of this type of vertical disconnect degrades the quality of water by changing the QUANTITY of the water.
